LawtechUK selects five pioneers to participate in R&D sandbox initiative

As part of the LawtechUK project, CILEx Regulation will be working with the other legal services regulators to provide regulatory support to the five lawtech innovators that have been selected to participate in LawtechUK’s Sandbox Pilot. The participants have been narrowed down from 65 applicants and will receive dedicated access to the regulators to help navigate regulation and governance issues, along with a host of other benefits.

LawtechUK, a government-backed initiative aimed at supporting the digital transformation of the UK legal sector has recently announced the first cohort of participants to take part in their Lawtech R&D Sandbox Pilot. The sandbox has been designed to fast track transformative ideas, products and services that address the legal needs of businesses and society.

The pilot will run for three months, beginning in December, and is aimed at tackling major barriers to growth of lawtechs, including “providing better access to data, cross-sector regulator engagement, and timely input from decision-makers”.

Five participants were selected by the Lawtech Sandbox Steering Board, from a total of 65 applications, with those selected addressing a range of challenges currently facing the legal sector.

Each lawtech pioneer will be granted access to a host of benefits for the duration of the project, including:

  • having direct contact with the “Regulatory Response Unit” for dedicated advice and support
  • connections to LawtechUK’s professional network
  • advice from applied ethics experts in the design and development of products
  • access to legal datasets

CILEx Regulation forms part of the Regulatory Response Unit – a fast-response forum of 11 cross-sector regulators. As part of this role, we will be supporting pioneers to navigate regulatory and governance issues by providing tailored guidance and assurance.
